With the cuts to Medicare still looming large in the minds of private medical practitioners, more and more doctors are talking about simply opting out of the program. Of course, that may prove easier said than done. There are actually quite a few hoops to jump through to opt out in accordance with the law. Plus, you have to go through the whole process again every two years. You will need to make sure the extra paperwork is worth it. If you do plan to opt out, be aware that cutting corners is not an option.
There are currently over 55 million uninsured Americans under the age of 65. What are you doing to obtain these cash paying patients? One way to market to these patients is to align yourself with Medical Savings Cards. These are programs designed specifically for the uninsured to access affordable healthcare by offering a cash discount. Something most doctors already do! Most practices are not familiar with the bottom line benefits to the Medical Savings Card world. These practices include:
- Driving more cash paying patients into your practice.
- The fee schedules are higher than most HMO, PPO and Medicare reimbursements.
- No billing or claims forms to complete.
- No waiting for payment! The patient is required to pay at the time of service.
- No Pre-Certifications or authorizations! You and the patient are the only parties involved in managing their healthcare.

At the height of this country’s recession, patients are feeling the pinch when in comes to prescription drug coverage. And those stresses are further passed to physician offices in the form of nearly 191 hours spent monthly helping patients receive necessary drugs through pharmaceutical prescription assistance programs. While no one would insinuate that it’s anything but noble to help your patients obtain the prescriptions they need, the bottom line is that this is a non-reimbursed service for your office that is stealing man hours from an already overworked staff.

We plan on doing a series of commentaries, articles, podcasts and webinars on the REAL physician perspective. If you are interested in being interviewed for this project, please contact us at 877-311-3338 or email skrueger@hna-net.com
